His Excellency Professor Brett Delahunt (Grand Prior of The Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem Grand Priory in New Zealand) was received at the Royal Palace on Wednesday, 4th October 2023 to present to Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u a donation of a cheque for $40,000.00 (NZD).
The donation will assist Her Majesty’s Charity in providing continued support and assistance for the ongoing recovery efforts and relief supplies to the communities affected by the volcanic eruption and Tsunami of 15th January 2022 as well as, the elderly and vulnerable members of society.
The Order of St. Lazarus is an Order of Chivalry established in 1098 during the Christian Crusades and was predominantly, focused on providing care for lepers and outcasts in the Middle Ages. Throughout, the centuries the influence and establishment of the Order has spread worldwide and was founded in New Zealand in 1962.
The Grand Priory’s work in New Zealand supports Maori and Pacific Communities through sponsorship of a variety of programs including collaboration with the New Zealand Police on providing Victim Support, the funding of various medical research including Research for Life, Patient aftercare support programs for those who have undergone Cancer treatment, provision of hospital equipment and many other rehabilitation programs.
The Grand Priory’s visit to Tonga is to foster closer working ties with Her Majesty’s Charity and to further explore possible avenues for collaboration and to provide continuous support for the People of Tonga.
