
Mr Sam Swire (Chairman of SWIRE Shipping) was received by Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u at the Royal Palace on Friday 9th February 2024 to discuss and explore possible avenues for further collaboration between Her Majesty’s Charity and the SWIRE Group Organisation, for the benefit of the People of Tonga.

SWIRE Shipping has provided several assistances to Her Majesty’s Charity including: (i) cooperative efforts with the Tonga High Commission Canberra and PILI E TAUHALA during HTHH in which, a supply of 170 containers were utilized to transfer humanitarian relief supplies to Her Majesty’s Charity and other organizations in the Kingdom (2022); (ii) Pacific School Furniture Program to Tonga resulted in the coordination and shipment of donated school furniture from Australia’s St. Bethany’s College and Regina Coeli Catholic Primary School. The donated school furniture were distributed to ‘Apifo’ou College, ‘Ahopanilolo Technical Institute and St. Francis of Assisi Kindergarten (2023); (iii) Charity Drive donation of 100 packages which, were distributed by Her Majesty’s Charity to the elderly (95+ years) in Tongatapu, Vava’u and ‘Eua during the Christmas season (2023).
The SWIRE Group is one of a number of umbrella activities of the London based parent company founded by John Swire & Sons in 1816 and it has been in operation for the past 2 centuries. SWIRE has setup operations in the Asia Pacific Region namely, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Sri Lanka, theUnited States of America and expanded into the South Pacific region (Australia, PNG, Fiji and Tonga).
Mr Swire’s visit to the Tonga is to view the various projects supported by SWIRE and to hold further discussions with Her Majesty’s Charity and prospective partners with plans to broaden and expand SWIRE’S charitable efforts and business prospects in Tonga.
